Umzinto man jailed for rape
Police request the public to continue reporting all crimes, especially those against women and children.
Jabulani Bongani Hlangu (35) from the Lindelani area in Umzinto, who raped a fourteen-year-old girl, was sentenced to life imprisonment in the Scottburgh Regional Court recently.
The rape occurred on December 17, 2022, after Hlangu asked the teen to collect water and fetch a bucket from his room. He then forced her onto the bed and threatened her at knifepoint not to scream, or he would kill her.
He was arrested after a case was opened for investigation at Umzinto Saps on December 24.
He was denied bail and remained in police custody throughout his trial.
The case was investigated by Constable Mfundo Caluza of Port Shepstone Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS).
Unit Commander Lieutenant Colonel Devika Pillay is pleased with the sentence and commends the young victim for reporting the rape, resulting in another sexual offender being removed from society and saving another potential victim.
She encourages all victims of crimes against women and children to do the same.
