KZN cops make 13 579 arrests in April

The fight against crime and criminality continues and police appreciate the continued support from community members.

Police in KwaZulu-Natal arrested 13 579 suspects for various crimes in April.

The arrests are a culmination of hard work by police officers who worked day and night in pursuing those individuals who are in conflict with the law.

A concerted effort was made to tackle contact crimes cases such as murder, attempted murder, rape and many others. These efforts were not in vain with the arrest of
3 336 suspects in that crime category.

Topping this list with 1 540 arrests are those sought in cases of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

* 194 suspects were arrested for robbery.

* 178 arrests for rape coupled with a further 34 arrests for various sexual offences in just 30 days strongly signals the intent in dealing decisively with those who continue to violate vulnerable groups such as women and children.

* 156 suspects were arrested for murder while a further 140 were nabbed for attempted murder.

Police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said police management is committed to dealing with the drugs scourge.

This was evident after 1 863 suspects were arrested for drug-related cases and a large quantity of an assortment of drugs were seized in various parts of the province.

Also, 313 firearms, including 26 rifles and 3 806 rounds of ammunition were recovered.

During operations, 140 people were arrested for being in unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition.

Netshiunda said serious inroads have been made in stock theft and other livestock related cases, and 61 suspects were arrested for such crimes, however, police are still hard at work searching for more suspects.

Some 229 people were arrested for burglary and various household goods were recovered.

The suspects’ cases are in various courts around the province.
