Man jailed for arson, rape and assault

Detective Sergeant Jairus Perumal of Umzinto Saps was the investigating officer.

Syabonga Tolomo Shabane (29) was sentenced to life imprisonment for rape, 10 years for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH), and a further 10 years for arson in the Scottburgh Regional Court recently.

The sentences will run concurrently.

Detective Sergeant Jairus Perumal of Umzinto Saps was initially assigned to a case of arson after a house was set alight in the Malangeni area on November 1, 2023.

Shabane was arrested the day after the incident and detained. However, he was released on bail to appear in court on a later date.

Perumal investigated further and found that Shabane had also raped and assaulted a woman with a beer bottle, for which she had to seek medical attention. Also, it resulted in her fleeing to another area for her safety.

Additional charges of rape and assault GBH were added to the case, and a warrant of arrest was issued after he failed to appear in court on his scheduled date.

Shabane was re-arrested in December last year and stood trial on all three counts.

Perumal is commended by the Ugu District detective commander, Brigadier Bongani Sibiya, for the outstanding sentence.
