Victor Mseleku, charged with the murder of Constable Jarius Joshua Govender, was recently sentenced in the Scottburgh Regional Court.
Mseleku (41) was handed 10 years’ imprisonment for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm, and a further one year for possession of live rounds of ammunition.

He will go on trial for Govender’s murder on October 20.
Mseleku was arrested in April last year after he was found in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition in the Sawoti area. He was being sought for the murder of Govender (24) who was killed on the N2 near Scottburgh in August 2023.
Govender who was stationed at Port Shepstone Public Order Police was off-duty at the time of the incident.
Hawks spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Simphiwe Mhlongo, said Govender was driving on the N2 from Port Shepstone to Durban when his girlfriend had a tyre problem.
“They both stopped on the roadside, while changing the tyre he was accosted by Mseleku and a scuffle ensued. Shots were fired at him and they were robbed of their cellphones. Govender died on the scene.”
Hawks from Port Shepstone Serious Organised Crime Investigation followed up on positive information and Mseleku and his accomplice, Mfaniseni Nombika (31), were arrested on April 27, 2024.

They were found in possession of unlicensed firearms and live rounds of ammunition.
They appeared in court and their bail application was successfully opposed.
Their trial was then separated, hence, Mseleku was sentenced.
Mseleku and Nombika appeared in the Scottburgh Regional Court for Govender’s murder on Monday last week. The case was postponed for trial to October 20.
Major General Dr Lesetja Senona, provincial head of Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation welcomed the sentence and applauded the members for the good work.
