Man handed life for rape

Victims are encouraged to report such crimes to parents, teachers or religious leaders who are then obligated to make a report to the nearest police station.

Sivuyile Gamon Njokweni (50) was handed a life sentence for rape in the Port Shepstone Regional Court on May 29.

Njokweni raped a child (12) in Nositha area on May 12, 2022. The child reported the matter to her teacher.

Njokweni remained in police custody throughout his trial.

He was also declared unfit to possess a firearm and his name will be entered in the National Register for Sex Offenders.

The investigating officer in the case was Detective Sergeant Nandipha Boqwana of Margate FCS.

Ugu District Commissioner, Major General Sethenya Nxamagele is pleased with the sentence.

“Saps are determined to play a lead role in championing the fight against crimes targeting the most vulnerable members of our communities – children. Victims of rape and gender-based violence can find a measure of satisfaction when their oppressors receive lengthy prison sentences such as in this case.”
