Man in court for killing lover with hammer

The murder accused was remanded in custody and will appear again in the Umzumbe Magistrate's Court on July 29.

The family of Nontando Shozi who was killed with a hammer in the Cabhane area under Mtwalume is calling for justice to be served.

The 20-year-old was allegedly killed by her lover, who appeared in the Umzumbe Magistrate’s Court last Thursday. The murder accused was remanded in custody and will return to court on July 29.

Shozi’s legal guardian, Zandile Cele, said they are calling on detectives and magistrates to give them the closure they need.

Women of Umzumbe demonstrate outside the court.

She said their daughter was brutally murdered on May 25, at a young age

“As a young woman, we had high expectations of Nontando. As a family, our wish is for the murderer to get a life sentence because should he be released, the community will take the law into their hands,” she said.

She added that it was important for courts to give proper rulings when it comes to gender-based violence cases.
Cele explained that their home has been empty and dull without the young woman.

She said it would have been better if Shozi had fallen sick and they had seen her die because of the sickness.

“It is heart breaking to hear that your child was murdered, and you could not be there to help her. That is why we are relying on the justice system to help us now that our daughter is no more,” she said.

Meanwhile, Ward 16 councillor Bhekani Mngoma said he has noticed people have been dying in his ward by guns or other dangerous weapons.

Calls for justice to be served were made outside the Umzumbe Magistrate’s Court.

Mngoma was speaking to Fever outside the court.

He said with the ongoing violence in the area, he is not sure whether prayer is needed.

“I would like to call on all Ward 16 residents to come together and fight this bloodshed plaguing our area. This violence is mostly targeting our youth, which is why this issue needs a collaborative approach,” he said.
