Local link in rail agency manager’s murder

The four are facing murder and/or conspiracy to commit murder charges.

A 24-year-old man who appeared in the Scottburgh Magistrate’s Court on a separate matter last week, has been identified as the fourth suspect in the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) murder case.

The regional manager of Prasa, Jacob Khoaele (53) was murdered on January 22.

“Khoaele was shot and killed in a hail of bullets inside his vehicle on Shelbourne Avenue in La Lucia,” said Saps KZN spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda.

The Provincial Serious and Violent Crime: Murder and Robbery Unit detectives arrested the man last Friday, while he appeared in court on a case of house robbery and attempted murder. He had allegedly shot a homeowner before stealing his vehicle in Hibberdene on November 11, 2024.

The unit also arrested 35-year-old twin brothers in connection with the murder on July 27.

Further investigations led to the arrest of 38-year-old Sandile Sakhile Ngcobo, who according to police, is the suspected mastermind. He made his first appearance in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on August 4.

The four are facing murder and/or conspiracy to commit murder charges.

Also, Ngcobo is an accused in a triple murder and attempted murder case in which he allegedly shot and killed three people in Mtwalume who were accused of a murder in Msinsini in 2021.

“The three had appeared in court when they were shot and killed inside their vehicle on June 27. A passer-by also sustained a gunshot wound,” explained Colonel Netshiunda.

The Prasa suspects will be in the dock at the Durban Magistrate’s Court this week, and investigations are ongoing for two more suspects believed to be involved in the murder.
