Extortion is a serious crime and punishable by law. Penalties may include imprisonment, fines and court-ordered restitution.
The most common types of extortion include:
1. Blackmail – Threatening to reveal sensitive or damaging information unless demands (usually for cash) are met.
2. Protection rackets – Forcing individuals or businesses to pay for protection from harm, often caused by the extortionist themselves.
3. Cyber extortion – Using online threats such as data theft, hacking, or cyber-attacks to demand money or services.
4. Financial extortion – Coercing someone into making payments, handing over property, or giving up livestock through intimidation or threats.
If you are a victim:
1. Do not comply with demands, as this can escalate the situation.
2. Seek counselling – victims often experience high levels of stress or anxiety.
