More than 12 600 arrests in July as KZN police clamp down on crime

KwaZulu-Natal police arrested 12 624 individuals in July through routine and specialised operations across the province.
Of these, 3 741 were linked to contact crimes – including 216 for murder and 201 for attempted murder. A total of 193 were taken in for rape, with others facing charges for sexual assault, attempted rape, and child abuse.
Police recovered 331 firearms, more than 16 000 rounds of ammunition, and 610 dangerous weapons – including 536 knives and 36 machetes.
Drug-related arrests totalled 2 108, and 519 motorists were taken off the roads for driving under the influence of alcohol.
A further 201 were arrested for various robbery-related crimes, while 1 720 were linked to assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and 925 to common assault.
In efforts to curb stock theft, police arrested 48 individuals and recovered 70 cattle and 77 goats.
