Cable theft in Marburg affects traffic lights
Traffic lights at the intersection of Sugarmill Road and Crescent Street in Marburg are always subjected to cable theft.
Rising incidents of cable theft are affecting traffic lights in Ray Nkonyeni Municipality. This concern was raised by municipal spokesperson, Simon April, on Tuesday last week.
April said the criminal activity has left many intersections without functioning traffic signals, putting the lives of motorists, pedestrians and other road users at risk.
He said a typical example was the intersection of Sugarmill Road and Crescent Street in Marburg. “This is where traffic lights have been repaired several times, only to be vandalised and stripped of copper cables within days,” he said.
April added that the municipality currently needs R170 000 to repair these traffic lights.
He said cable theft is not only a safety hazard, but it also results in unnecessary expenditure of public funds that could be directed towards other essential services.
“We call upon community members, local businesses and the general public to work with us in combating this scourge, by reporting any suspicious activity near traffic lights or electrical infrastructure immediately,” he said.
“Please share information that may lead to the arrest and prosecution of offenders. Together, we can protect our infrastructure, save public resources and keep our roads safe.”
