Husband jailed for brutally killing wife in Umkomaas

The sentencing was carried out in Scottburgh during Women's Month.

An Umkomaas man has received life imprisonment after brutally killing his wife in front of their children on March 29 last year.

At the time of the incident, the woman and her children had arrived at her husband’s house in Umkomaas, the site of the crime, which occurred in the afternoon.

“An argument ensued and the husband attacked his wife, throwing boiling water on her, and then stabbing her repeatedly with a knife. He assaulted her with an iron rod, all while in the presence of her minor children,” said Umkomaas Saps spokesperson, Captain Ranjith Rampersad.

The man cannot be named to protect the identity of the children.

Detective Warrant Officer Zarark Anwar Khan, the group commander of Umkomaas Serious and Violent Crimes, and a seasoned investigating officer with over 30 years’ of experience led the prompt arrest of the man.

He was sentenced at the Scottburgh Regional Court on August 8, and also declared unfit to possess a firearm.

“The high degree of violence in the commission of the crime was brutal,” said Khan.

He also mentioned that gender-based violence has become a scourge and that he has the passion and zeal to seek justice for victims, and to protect vulnerable members of society as well as ensure that those who commit crimes are brought to justice.

The acting station commander at Umkomaas Saps, Lieutenant Colonel Sanelisiwe Friedah Nkomo, praised Khan and other role players for their excellent work.

“Femicide has become a defining feature of the social landscape warranting urgent sustained attention and robust deliberations,” added Rampersad.

“An appeal is made to report all cases of rape, sexual assault or any form of violence to a local police station.”
