Prosecutor, policeman among drunk drivers arrested
Over 160 people have been arrested in roadblocks across KZN for driving under the influence of alcohol.
A public prosecutor, a policeman and a police clerk were allegedly caught driving with alcohol levels four to six times over the legal limit on the South Coast recently.
Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) arrested the public prosecutor, a 44-year-old woman, for driving under the influence on the R620 Marine Drive in Margate.
According to RTI, her alcohol reading was 0.83mg/L, which is four times over the legal limit. The woman was charged and will appear in court in November, as blood test results are being awaited.
MEC of Transport and Human Settlements Siboniso Duma said: “Our Zero Tolerance, No Nonsense and Alufakwa campaign is our only weapon in our battle against drinking and driving. Hopefully, this latest arrest will ignite a conversation. We thank the Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi for deploying teams of law enforcement officers to ensure that we clean up our road networks.”
The policeman based at Port Edward Saps was arrested with an alcohol reading of 1.05mg/L, six times over the legal limit.
On the same evening, a clerk based at Southport Saps was also arrested with an alcohol reading of 0.85mg/L, four times over the legal limit.
Saps Ugu District Corporate Communication said the case involving the officer is not in court as yet, while the clerk’s case has been postponed for further investigation to November 3.
Ugu District Commissioner Major-General Sethenya Nxamagele expressed her disappointment with the actions of the members as they should have known better. “No one is above the law, and internal processes will be instituted to deal with the matter,” she said.
Over 160 motorists have been arrested for drinking and driving in KZN over three weekends.
