Port Shepstone Saps Vispol officers responded to a scene at a bus stop in Murchison last Thursday, after being alerted by officers of Wolf Security who had found a vehicle which had a flat tyre and gone to assist.
“After becoming suspicious of the occupants, the security officers contacted the police. On searching the vehicle, Saps officers found empty plastic containers, of which one contained a liquid suspected to be ethanol,” said Saps Ugu District Communications.
Large bags of empty alcohol bottles were also found as well as cardboard boxes and cash. Five men, aged between 24 and 28, were travelling from the Eastern Cape to Umlazi when the vehicle had to stop at Murchison.
The men were charged for manufacturing illicit alcohol and were released to appear in court at a later date. The liquid will be sent for forensic analysis.
“The public is cautioned to purchase alcohol at reputable outlets. Check for authenticity of packaging and that seals have not been broken. If the liquor has a suspicious taste or smell, report to police on 039 6881287. A designated liquor officer conducts regular inspections at local liquor outlets and taverns,” said Saps Ugu District Communications.
