Cash van bombed in violent Nqabeni heist

Saps and emergency response teams remained on scene late into the evening as investigations continued.

Three people were injured during a cash-in-transit heist near Nqabeni outside Izingolweni on May 19, prompting the closure of the road as police and emergency services responded to multiple crime scenes.

Initial reports indicated that an armoured cash vehicle was ambushed and bombed by a heavily armed gang believed to consist of about 20 suspects.

As the situation unfolded, emergency responders were called to three separate scenes – one on the N2 Izingolweni, another on the gravel road to Celebane, and a third on the KwaNyuswa road.

Reports later emerged that members of a private security response unit, believed to be the Wolf Security team, came under fire at one of the scenes.

One security officer was reportedly seriously injured in the shooting.
