The Scottburgh Regional Court handed down a life imprisonment sentence to Phumlani Myende (31) for the murder of his girlfriend in Umzinto last year.
Witness statements indicated that on March 18, 2025, Myende was seen assaulting her along the road. The next day, community members found her lifeless body.
Police arrested Myende and bail was repeatedly denied. He was sentenced to life in prison on July 2, 2026.
Myende’s victim’s name is being withheld to protect the identity of her six children.
Ugu District Saps commends the court for ensuring Myende was sentenced accordingly.
The investigating officer, Detective Sergeant Senzo Chiliza of Umzinto Detective Service, put together a concise investigation for the prosecution to obtain the maximum sentence.
The public is reminded that a victim friendly room is available at a police station to provide privacy for a victim to give her statement.
