From aqua fitness to making blankets for animals

For this group of women it has been working out in the pool to making blankets to help keep rescues warm this Winter.

Some of the coast’s four-legged friends will have a warmer winter this year thanks to the kindness and skill of a group of aqua-aerobic women.

Debbie King is a qualified South African water fitness instructor and has a group of women she has classes with.

One of them saw an article about blankets being provided for orphan rhinos.

This inspired the women to see what they could do, and they got together to knit and/or crochet squares, which then formed part of the blankets.

Debbie was thus joined by Karin Bowker, Gerda Nel, Maria Duvenage, Mechelle Millingham, Annemarie Britz and Ruth Fifield in this endeavour.

Artist Karen Tranter helped put it all together,

However, it turned out that the orphan rhinos already had enough blankets, so they looked closer to home with the Cancer Treatment Centre in Port Shepstone and Harmony Hills Animal Hotel and Rescue Haven in Sea Park benefiting.

Debbie said they worked for three months, then got them together, took pics and delivered them. “We are continuing with this project so that we can do the same again next year,” she said.

Penny Taylor of Harmony Hills was overwhelmed by the unsolicited kindness and generosity shown, especially with the cold weather the coast is currently experiencing.
