WEATHER WARNING: Waves of 4.5m to 6.5m expected between Port Edward and Richards Bay

People are advised to avoid going to the beach and be aware of strong rip currents, especially during rip tides.

Damaging waves are expected between Port Edward and Richards Bay until Friday this week, which may lead to disruption at beachfronts.

This warning was issued on Wednesday (yesterday) after a cold front passed through resulting in significant waves.

Wave heights will range between 4.5m to 6.5m between Port Edward and Richards Bay.

Ray Nkonyeni Municipality and Umdoni Municipality are affected.

These conditions are expected to persist until Friday morning.

Disruption to harbours/ports is expected, as well as difficulty in navigation, vessels are at risk of taking on water and capsizing.

This can cause damage to coastal infrastructure.

Small to medium boats are advised to stay away from the open sea and seek shelter of a harbour.

People are advised to avoid going to the beach and be aware of strong rip current, especially during rip tides.
