Karaoke proves to be singing success
Everybody claims it to be the biggest karaoke event in South Coast ever.
An ‘impersonating’ competition at Douglas Mitchell Sports Grounds was a rocking success last Wednesday.
The Amateur Karaoke Association (AKA) organised this exciting event, with competitors coming from as far as Amanzimtoti.
With almost 50 men and woman singing their hearts out, it goes without saying that it was a whole lot of fun.

The newly renovated premises at Douglas Mitchell was packed with spectators supporting their favourite singers.
Gerrie Odendaal, convener of AKA, said the competitors had a chance to grab a share of the available prizes.
He said he had no idea there was so much singing talent on the South Coast. This was something he repeated on a number of occasions during the night.
There were prizes for the best-dressed man and best-dressed woman, plus numerous lucky draw cash prizes in order for the crowd to win some as well.

Odendaal said that after the first round, the judges selected the six best singers, and they sang one more song of the person they were impersonating.
Then the best three singers were announced, with loud support from the 200-odd people who attended.
The atmosphere was electric, the tension built up… and then three extremely happy singers were selected.

Third place went to Peet Haarhoff, runner-up was Tweezie Leite, and the winner was Myrna Brunette.
“It is obvious that such an event cannot happen without the backup of generous sponsors, and we are grateful to them,” said Odendaal.
