Retired fireman wins gold at world games
Max Magnussen from Sunwich Port attended the 15th World Firefighters Games held in Denmark recently.
About 3 000 firefighters took part in more than 40 sporting codes at the World Firefighters Games held in Aalborg, Denmark, last month.
Now retired, firefighter Max Magnussen (72) from Sunwich Port attended the 15th edition of the games from September 4 to 16 and returned home with four gold medals and a silver medal.
He won gold in the 100m, 200m, 400m and triple jump and silver in the long jump.
Some 40 firefighters represented South Africa.

Magnussen was based at eThekwini Fire Department in Durban, where he spent 33 years.
“I really enjoyed the ‘Olympic Games’ for firefighters, and I am proud that I won five medals. Denmark is a beautiful place; I not only met South African firefighters but also those from around the world.”
Since 1998, he has attended the games, which are held every second year.
He took part in the 72 to 74 age category. “I had to train very hard over the years to retain my fitness and keep up my running speed. I am blessed that God has kept me in good health to compete.”
Max looks forward to the next games to be held in Saudi Arabia in 2026.
