Law graduate’s hard work pays off

"Always remember that diamonds are made under pressure," says Ilicha Smuts who recently graduated with a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree cum laude.

Ilicha Smuts (23) from Ramsgate graduated with a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree cum laude recently.

She studied for four years at Unisa, which is the minimum time frame to complete the degree. Her next step is to complete her articles with S Stander and Associates and to be admitted as an attorney.

Speaking about her graduation, Ilicha said it was the most incredible experience.

“I loved seeing how proud my family was, and in that moment, it felt like I had achieved my biggest dream,” she said.

Ilicha said she had a lot of help from many people in the legal field, such as Robin Petterson and Sue-Ann Stander, who were always there to assist her.

“In my personal life, my biggest roleplayers who kept me motivated would definitely be my mother, Surina Smuts, and Robin and Carol Petterson. Without them, I would never have been able to achieve this accomplishment. I thank all of them from the bottom of my heart for making my dream a reality,” she said.

Ilicha said it was definitely hard work, as she studied long distance and worked full time; however, she had a dream and knew she could achieve it by being disciplined and focused.

“I think what motivated me the most was that a lot of people doubted me and my main goal was to prove them wrong,” she said.

Ilicha has always wanted to study law, as she had a great interest in the field, as well as history and business.

Growing up in a business and legal environment also contributed to her ‘career’ decision.

Any advice for those currently studying?

Ilicha says studying can be overwhelming as there is a lot of pressure, but always remember that diamonds are made under pressure.

“I remember I had such a big fear of failure, but I soon realised that it’s okay to fail as it’s the only way you’ll grow and learn. What is important is the comeback after the failure. Set goals and dreams for yourself, and don’t allow negativity to break you down. It’s easier said than done, but try to let negativity motivate you,” she said.
