The Port Shepstone Twinning Association will celebrate its 30 year anniversary on November 9 this year.

The association had its annual general meeting on October 23, where chairperson Thulas Mkhize reflected on its historical achievements, which were built on community support, volunteerism, commitment, and perseverance.

He said that as a non-governmental organisation with volunteers, it had a proud history.

“Many have been engaged and contributed immensely to the growth and development of the association. Many have also since died, and we pay tribute to their contribution,” he said.

Lillemor Nesset, a 16-year-old delegate from Sweden, was part of the delegation in 1994 and motivated the idea of establishing an NGO. She will be attending the celebration.

Tormod Nesset, the person whose vision it was to see a united society, contributing to the development and promotion of social cohesion, will also be coming to reconnect with many past delegates.

One of the coordinators, Bo Hellström, who worked closely with the late Pauline Duncan, will be here in person to celebrate with past host families from deep rural communities.

He coordinated the Global School Journey and Global Profile progammes spanning two decades.

The Swedish ambassador, Håkan Juholt, will be the keynote speaker.

Over the three decades, the association has supported more than 250 delegates to Sweden in various programmes.

It pioneered the Time Travel Programme, supporting school programmes, creating job opportunities, and researching and recording local histories.

The association has empowered learners and teachers through various exchanges and fostered community engagement and social cohesion.

It has also established international, national and local credibility through networking and so much more.

As a member of Bridging Ages International, leadership has been provided, plus support for national and international training on the Time Travel and Applied Heritage Programme.

There have been partnerships and support for many other initiatives arising from the twinning programme and RNM’s partnership with Oskarshamn municipality and Ugu District’s partnership with Soderhamn municipality.
