Former Sheppie woman inks chapter in SA handbook

It tackles key issues of inequality, poverty, unemployment and fosters dialogue for addressing SA’s critical challenges.

Having been born and raised in Port Shepstone laid a strong foundation for Rooks Moodley, who recently wrote a chapter in the South African Handbook of Agency, Freedom and Justice, Volume 3.

She was invited by Professor TR Dhovani to write the article.

“As a community development specialist, social justice activist, facilitator and national builder, I grabbed this opportunity not realising that these books, the three volumes, will set the stage for our country to spark citizen conversation, engagement and action.”

Sadly, Prof Dhovani, who co-authored the article with Moodley, died before Volume 3 could be handed to him.

For Moodley, her gifts and talents were unlocked at home; it started with her faith and the community where she lived, Albersville and Marburg.

She attended Jai Hind and Port Shepstone Primary schools and Port Shepstone Secondary. During her schooling career, teachers recognised her potential at a young age and gave her opportunities. “I was very involved in speech contests and debates and had the privilege of being the head girl at Port Shepstone Secondary.”

Initially, she started her career as a chartered accountant, but after being inspired by Pastor Vasin, Rangie Gounden and Reverend Danny Chetty, her calling as a social justice activist was born.

“My foundation includes my faith, ideologies, philosophies, upbringing, conditioning and exposure, which shaped me into the person I am,” said Rooks.

The book launch was held in Sandton recently.

This series was initiated and edited by the late Prof Muxe Nkondo and Dr Reuel Khoza.

It tackles key issues of inequality, poverty, and unemployment and fosters dialogue for addressing South Africa’s critical challenges. It’s an excellent read for anyone who cares about their country. It can be purchased at bookshops or contact Rooks on 073 9094711.
