Major burial ground project launched

The project will also create local job opportunities.

In an effort to address KZN’s shortage of burial sites, the Inkosi Sawoti Memorial Park project was launched last week.

Umdoni Local Municipality hopes to enhance regional infrastructure by supporting the development of this new cemetery.

Once completed, it will provide a dignified final resting place for community members and alleviate the need for additional burial space.

Deputy mayor Phila Thabethe described this project as a transformative step for the municipality.

“We’ve witnessed slow developments in our municipality, but this project marks the beginning of a new phase of growth for Umdoni. It presents one of our biggest opportunities to stimulate further investments and regional development.,” he said.

Thabethe also highlighted the broader provincial challenge of securing sufficient burial sites, emphasising that the Inkosi Sawoti Memorial Park is set to play a key role in addressing this issue.

Ndlunkulu Sayini Duma (wife of the local chief) noted the significance of repurposing the land for this purpose.

“This development is a beacon of growth for our rural community, and it shows that there is still potential for progress and investment in our area, and we welcome this opportunity wholeheartedly. It presents one of our biggest opportunities to stimulate further investments and regional development,” she said.

The cemetery project led by Jabulani Mazibuko, CEO of Mazibuko Property Investments, stated that the first burial site will be operational by February – complete with secure fencing, 24-hour security and other essential services.

The project will also create local job opportunities, contributing to economic growth in the area.

The cemetery will have the capacity to accommodate over 300 000 burials and is designed to meet the region’s long-term needs. This will eliminate the need to recycle existing graveyards, ensuring that future generations can be provided for without the constant pressure of limited space.
