Authors gather to talk books

The event was organised by Authors Are Artists (AAA), a structure formed to nurture and develop authors.

Three books by women authors were officially launched at the Ugu Literature Festival, held at the Uvongo Town Hall recently.

The authors and their works include ‘He Had Other Plans’ by Thandekile Ngcobo, ‘Silent Pain’ by Dr Bongi Owusu and ‘Girl, You Are Enough’ by Zonke Shazi-Hlongwane.

AAA’s co-founder, Mboniseni Khumalo, said the idea to hold such a festival came about last year at an authors’ gathering held at the Margate Art Museum.

He said that during the meeting, the group discussed the need to support upcoming authors and provide guidance on the writing process.

Writing workshops were also conducted at the event. The theme for the day was addressing social ills through books.

“Many authors don’t know the correct structure of writing books. Some may take too long to finish their material because they lack the relevant knowledge. Others are struggling to publish and distribute their works because they don’t know which channels to follow,” said Khumalo.

He said the event was blessed to be attended by Dr Nakanjani Sibiya, a well-known IsiZulu novel writer who has written Bengithi Lizokuna and Kuxolelwa Abanjani.
