Diamond couple continues to sparkle

They have lived a happy life in Shelly Beach, raising three children and enjoying six grandchildren.

Ivan and Marion Jones-Craig celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary on February 6.

Sixty years ago, the wedding took place at the Victoria Methodist Church in Johannesburg.

The now 83-year-old octogenarians, who met at a church camp, said married life wasn’t always easy. “The engagement ring was thrown back many times,” chuckled Ivan.

In 1973, they bought a house in Shelly Beach on an acre of land, advertised for R40 000.

They couldn’t afford that amount and made an offer of R26 000, which was accepted!

They built a number of flats on this property called ‘Craigsway’, which housed about 300 tenants over 44 years.

There were no shops in Shelly Beach at that time, only bush, and Marion prayed that at least one shop would open to buy basic food. Her prayer was answered with not only one but two malls in later years.

What sage advice would they give to aspiring newlyweds?

“Be quick to forgive, laugh often, and make God the centre of your family.”
