Illegal dumper caught red-handed

The Department of Transport staff member was fined.

An alert motorist, Derek Herbert, who was driving towards the Umtentweni toll road on Tuesday last week, noticed a yellow bakkie offloading dirt over a drain which had recently been cleaned.

He stopped and realised it was a KZN Department of Transport vehicle. “I engaged with them, and they apologised and promised not to dump. I asked Umtentweni Community Policing Forum members to keep an eye on them. As soon as I left, they were caught dumping again,” said Derek.

The CPF District Board’s deputy chairperson, Selvan Chetty, said Umtentweni has zero tolerance for illegal dumping, irrespective of who the culprit is. “Thanks to Derek for shooting out to the illegal dumpsite so quickly and sorting things out, “said Chetty.

Nomusa Zulu, the acting spokesperson for Ray Nkonyeni Municipality, said a Section 341 notice for illegal dumping was served to the individual, along with a fine of R500.

“They were also asked to remove the debris which had been dumped illegally. We encourage members of the public and entities in general to familiarise themselves with municipal bylaws, which shall be strictly enforced. We are also appreciative of the efforts of community members who are consistently vigilant on illegal activities, particularly those which threaten our environment,” said Zulu.
