Drunk and disorderly
Lazer 911 teams were instrumental in pulling over a drunk driver who was behind the wheel of a municipal vehicle.
After nearly knocking over pedestrians, security officers had to forcefully stop an intoxicated driver in a Ray Nkonyeni Municipality vehicle.
Quick acting Lazer 911 officer Winston Lemon and other Lazer 911 teams were instrumental in pulling over the drunk driver who was behind the wheel of a clearly marked ‘education and waste’ municipal vehicle on Tuesday, April 22 just after 19:15.
Johan Zeeman, operations manager from Lazer 911, said a message was received on the Marburg Community Police Forum’s WhatsApp group that a resident was following a municipal bakkie from Batstone’s Drift travelling towards Albersville, Marburg on the Sugar Mill Road.
The resident said in his voice note that he witnessed the vehicle swerving left and right on the road.
“At one bend, half the van went into the bush and the driver pulled out onto the road. When the driver approached the entrance of Palm View, he almost knocked the pedestrians and had to swerve into the oncoming lane.”
Zeeman said that is when Lemon along with two Lazer 911 vehicles cut him off at ‘diary robots’.
“At first he didn’t want to stop, but Lemon pulled in front of him and the two other vehicles (at the back) boxed the municipal vehicle in and got the driver to stop. There was beer inside the vehicle, and an open bottle of whiskey, which the driver and a passenger were busy drinking. Law Enforcement was called,” said Zeeman.
“While we were waiting for Law Enforcement to arrive, the occupants of the vehicle were trying to hide the bottle of whiskey in the bush, but we managed to find it,” said Zeeman.
Law Enforcement and Road Traffic Inspectorate arrived at the scene. It’s believed the driver and passenger were taken to the police station.
To date, the Herald has received no comment from Ray Nkonyeni Municipality regarding the incident, and whether any disciplinary action has been taken.
