Gary masters croquet craft

Local croquet members welcome new players.

Gary Culligan’s interest in croquet began in December 1976 at a croquet tournament at Loftus Versfeld, Pretoria.

It was there that he witnessed a double-banked doubles association croquet game, which he found mind-boggling.

At the time he was on a break from his career as an entomologist before commencing his studies in medicine.

In 1977, he joined a croquet club in Pretoria and began playing in tournaments both countrywide and abroad.

He was chosen for South Africa in 1996, against Japan in Tokyo, and again in 2000 against Ireland in Dublin.

He considers his most formidable opponent to be South Africa’s own Reg Bamford, a former world number one player.

Former SA player Gary Culligan is lending his expertise to growing croquet on the coast.

Gary retired as a professor of hematology at Medunsa in 2011 and now resides in Mbango Valley Association, where he has played a major role in the development of Mbango’s croquet club.

His enthusiasm, knowledge of the game, and contributions have been invaluable.

When asked about the future of croquet, particularly in KZN, Gary expressed his excitement about the club’s progress and its passion for raising awareness of the game, especially among outsiders and young players.

He finds it highly encouraging that the club has secured a sponsor, GraceMed Pharmacy, which shares its vision.

Gary remains eager to play an integral role in the club, helping youngsters learn the tactics and enjoy this exciting game.
