Octogenarian ‘youngsters’ inspire at Shoreline Challenge
The funds raised will go towards maintaining and repairing the Umtamvuna picnic site's thatched roofs.
More than 100 walkers completed the eighth and final Shoreline Challenge for 2025, from Port Edward to the Wild Coast Sun last Sunday, which was organised by the Mzimkhulu Honorary Officers.
Honorary Officer Maxine Willemse said the challenge was treated as a beach clean up, with many litter bags filled along the way.

She said the full distance walked was about 51.4km
Willemse congratulated Jen Els, Lindsay Rogerson and Paddy Norman for walking both ways for most of the legs.
“This is a huge effort and is to be commended. To our ‘youngsters’ (in their 80s) Dolly Bezuidenhout, Berit Long, Andrew Spence, Erica Albracht and Astrid Read – you are an inspiration to us all. Our four-legged walkers were also awarded treats at the end. The four-legged walkers were Milo, Juno, Griff, Bella and any others. We loved having them with us,” she said.

She added that the 86 walkers who completed all eight legs received beautiful T-shirts supplied by Pauline Watkins McGovern from Car Plates and Signs.
Willemse said walkers were transported by The Riverside on their boats across the Umtamvuna River to the restaurant where delicious breakfast buns were served, and the prize giving was held.

She added that chairperson, Teuns Willemse and Debbie King, thanked all who made the walk such a success.
“The funds raised will go towards maintaining and repairing the Umtamvuna picnic site’s thatched roofs. We hope to see you all back in 2026,” she said.
