Sand banks being raised again by the contractors this morning (Thursday).
High sea tides have once again impacted repair work on the Mzimkhulu River bridge, causing further delays.
This week’s unusually high tides have hindered progress by eroding sand banks and restricting access needed to continue work on pillar two.
Earlier this morning, the Herald visited the site, where contractors had resumed efforts to rebuild and raise the sand banks.
Videos capture the wash away at bridge
Videos taken by resident Mark Lawlor shows waves washing away sand banks and water encroaching around the base of the pillar.
Department awaits report from engineers
Department of Transport spokesperson Ndabezinhle Sibiya said the department is awaiting a report from engineers regarding the latest setback and will provide further actionable information once received.
This week’s high surf creates challenging conditions
The disruption coincided with this year’s highest tide, which occurred on Tuesday (7th) at 16:12, according to the South African Navy Hydrographic Office. The high surf created challenging conditions, with tides yesterday (Wednesday) and today (Thursday) only slightly lower.
