Big School beckons for Khula crèche graduates

The children left with tummies full of cake, sweets and a hearty lunch; and hearts brimming with love and gratitude.

Khula Community Centre, a registered NPO and PBO based in the rural Mahlabathini community about 40km from Port Shepstone, has been serving local families since 2010.

The centre runs a variety of projects focused on uplifting and empowering the youth in the area.

Khula recently hosted a joyful graduation ceremony for 54 five-year-olds from its crèche.

It was actually the centre’s 16th annual crèche graduation. Families gathered to celebrate each child, cheering them on as they prepared to take their next step into ‘big school’.

Also present were the centre’s 18 dedicated staff members, along with local community pastors from the Free Methodist Church.

The celebration truly marked the perfect end to the year. The children left with tummies full of cake, sweets and a hearty lunch; and hearts brimming with love and gratitude.

Operating Director Ally Minnaar explained that each year’s ceremony is designed to honour the children and celebrate their achievements in a meaningful way before they move on.

After three years in the care of their teachers, the farewell is always a tender and bittersweet moment.

Most of the graduates will now head to Grade R at the local primary school, with the hope that many will return to participate in Khula’s Afterschool Educational Programme in the years ahead.
