12 years of knitting hope for new-borns at Murchison Hospital

Crafters interested in joining Bowlers 4 Babies can contact Wendy Walker on 082 7855062.

A dedicated group of compassionate women, known as Bowlers 4 Babies, continues to make a meaningful difference by preparing and donating baby packs each month to underprivileged mothers at Murchison Hospital.

Bowlers 4 Babies was founded 12 years ago by Marie Forward and Wendy Walker of Margate Bowling Club. What began as a small initiative has since grown to include members from five bowling clubs within the Kingfisher Bowling Association, as well as many non-bowlers who share a passion for giving back.

The group also makes teddy bears, which are distributed by Dr Ramola Naidoo, the Ugu paediatrician, to four district hospitals.

Wendy said this is a continuous community project, which Bowlers 4 Babies hope will continue indefinitely.

She explained that members knit baby jerseys, hats, booties and blankets, which are assembled into thoughtful gift packs for mothers of new-born babies.

In addition, the group has donated baby clothing to the maternity ward at Port Shepstone Regional Hospital, Masinenge Clinic, Give a Child a Home, Rehoboth Orphanage, Hands of Hope, Breath of Life in Mthatha, as well as fulfilling many private requests.

“Our seamstresses also make kangaroo mother care pouches for premature babies, which definitely save lives.”

Crafters who would like to get involved and support this ongoing initiative can contact Wendy on 082 7855062.
