Passengers forced out of private vehicle by taxi driver near Sezela
It is alleged that the driver demanded that passengers use taxis instead.
Motorists from the mid-South Coast are concerned about passengers travelling in private vehicles after an incident involving taxi drivers last week.
A message circulated on local community groups stating that a private vehicle was stopped by a taxi driver and passengers from the vehicle were forced out. This was because the taxi driver allegedly demanded that passengers make use of taxis instead.
This incident has frightened locals as it impacts the safety of all road users in the area. This includes the R102, between Pennington and Malangeni, and the Bazley and Sezela turnoffs.
It was also mentioned that even though last week’s incident only affected a few vehicles locally, motorists are worried that this practise, gaining momentum nationally, could become a problem in the area.
Ugu District Saps was contacted for comment on the matter, and confirmed that members of Scottburgh Saps responded to the area where the incident allegedly occurred, provided visible patrols and held observation to prevent further occurrence of harassment of motorists.
As per the Saps, it was also stated that the routes mentioned as well as other busy roads will be patrolled more regularly.
Motorists are reminded to be vigilant at all times.
Scottburgh police can be contacted on 039 9789900 or 071 4573586 (Community Service Centre) to report any such incidents.
