Level 5 severe thunderstorm warning issued for parts of KZN

Residents within the Ray Nkonyeni Municipal area can report emergencies to the municipal emergency call centre on 039 682 5555.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a Level 5 weather warning for severe thunderstorms affecting parts of KwaZulu-Natal, including areas under the Ray Nkonyeni Municipality.

The warning is valid for Sunday, February 8, from 13:00 to 23:59.

Expected weather conditions

According to SAWS, the weather system is expected to bring severe thunderstorms with heavy downpours, with rainfall exceeding 50mm in some areas. Strong and potentially damaging winds, excessive lightning and hail are also forecast, along with scattered to widespread showers and thundershowers.

Potential impacts

Authorities have warned that the severe conditions may result in flooding of settlements, which could lead to the displacement of communities. There is also a risk to life due to fast-flowing rivers and streams, as well as the possibility of mudslides, rockfalls and soil erosion.

Flooding of roads and damage to bridges may occur, which could lead to road closures and traffic disruptions.

Safety precautions

Residents are urged to take all necessary precautions, including remaining indoors where possible and avoiding travel, particularly on roads affected by sinkholes or potholes. Community members are advised not to cross swollen rivers or streams and to move to higher ground if trapped by flooding.

Valuables should be placed above expected flood levels inside buildings, loose items should be secured, and the safety of pets and vehicles ensured. Outdoor activities should be avoided during storm conditions.

Emergency contact details

Residents within the Ray Nkonyeni Municipal area can report emergencies to the municipal emergency call centre on 039 682 5555.

Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant, follow official updates and adhere to all safety warnings as the severe weather system moves through the region.
