Roadside kindness changes lives for man and his dog in Umtentweni

If you hear a few good notes accompanied by a rather large and friendly Dane on Port Shepstone beaches, be sure to stop and support the duo.

A chance encounter on a roadside in Umtentweni has turned into a heart-warming story of compassion.

While on patrol in Ambleside recently, Hendrik Gericke of Mi7 noticed a great Dane named Daenerys struggling to walk alongside her owner. The six-year-old dog was limping badly, unable to put weight on her front paw.

Daenerys lives with her owner, a young man who fell upon hard times and had to leave his home, but not without his four-legged friend.

Being a seasoned K9 handler himself with a soft spot for dogs, Hendrik could not bare the sight and immediately turned around to offer his help. After examining the injury and noticing swelling, he treated the paw with bandages from his first aid kit. But his assistance didn’t end there.

Determined to ensure proper care, he later arranged and escorted both the dog and her owner to a local vet.

Daenerys was diagnosed with soft tissue damage and received treatment and medication. Gericke personally covered the costs and made sure the pair had food for the day.

The story didn’t stop there. After learning that the young owner – an aspiring musician who performs on Port Shepstone beaches – had lost his guitar, Mi7 stepped in to help, sponsoring a new one.

Thanks to this act of kindness, both man and dog are back on their feet, continuing their journey together.
