Reviving Paradise: Embrace the ride around the sun and grow

People need to be reminded that they are much more powerful than they give themselves credit for as we all continuously creating our own individual reality.

The lives and the depths of the stars seem impossibly remote from human experience and yet we are related in the most intimate way to their life cycles.

The very matter that makes us up was generated long ago and far away in red giant stars. The formation of the solar system may have been triggered by a nearby supernova explosion, after which the sun turned on its ultra violet light, poured into our atmosphere it’s warmth, generated lightning and these energy sources sparked the origin of life. Plants harvest sunlight converting solar into chemical energy, we and the other animals are parasites on the plants, and we are all of us solar powered. (Carl Sagan)

It’s only in the last less than a million years that we’ve had homo sapiens on earth and in the last few tens of thousands of years that we’ve had a civilization. If we destroy ourselves, deliberately or through inaction then it’s possible that we eliminate meaning, perhaps forever. And so that leads us to understand that we have a tremendous responsibility not to do that. Imagine there’s just us that think and can feel and in a very real sense, bring meaning to the universe. The decisions that we make now as a civilization have galactic implications. (Brian Cox)

The idea that our sense of self-worth comes not from an accident of birth means those of us who wish for us to be important should do something important. We should make an easily understandable, achievable and inspiring goal for the human species, and then set out and do it. Let’s make a planet in which nobody is starving. Let’s make a planet in which men and women have equal access to power. Let us make a planet in which no ethnic group lords it over another. Let’s have a planet in which science and engineering are used for the benefit of everybody on the planet.

For a few milliseconds of cosmic time, our species has lived on one very, very small rock in a very small solar system that’s a part of fantastically unimportant suburb in one of an uncountable number of galaxies. That’s the matter of which we are made, stardust. People need to be reminded that they are much more powerful than they give themselves credit for as we all continuously create our own individual reality. Think of the fact that the world around you, you have created without being taught, which is just a sliver of a microscopic experience in a galaxy that is a blip in the bigger picture.

Don’t be too hard on yourself, you are a magical, powerful, spiritual being who came here to have 3 things: direction, dignity and purpose. Embrace the rides around the sun, be kind and grow, baby, grow.
