Cancer patient from Gamalakhe needs public support

A Back-a-Buddy campaign (https://www.backabuddy.co.za/campaign/help-thobeka-move-through-cancer-with-dignity) remains open for anyone who would still like to contribute.

Thobeka Lushaba (41) of Gamalakhe is facing one of the hardest battles of her life.

Her life changed drastically in 2021 when she was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer. However, by the time she received the diagnosis, the cancer had already spread to her bones.

She said the disease initially affected her tailbone, which made it impossible for her to sit for long hours.
The illness has continued to progress.

Last year, she fractured her right arm and collarbone, more recently, her left hip bone has also been affected, making movement painful and difficult.

A scan shows Thobeka Lushaba’s fractured tailbone.

“I face daily challenges with mobility, pain, and the physical strain of ongoing cancer treatment,” said Thobeka.

A Back-a-Buddy campaign was recently started to assist Thobeka with urgent mobility needs during treatment. The campaign, which has a goal of R80 000 has already raised over R46 000, thanks to the generosity of friends, family, clients, community members and strangers who have been moved by her story.

The funds raised will help her access mobility support and equipment that will allow her to move more safely and comfortably as she continues her cancer treatment.
For someone whose bones are fragile and prone to fractures, the right mobility support is not a luxury, it is a lifeline.

“I am deeply touched by the love shown to me. The support has not only helped financially, but has also reminded me that I am surrounded by people who care. In the middle of pain, treatment, and uncertainty, the kindness of others has given me hope and strength to keep going.”

Her story is not only one of illness. It is also a story of resilience, entrepreneurship, sisterhood and community.

She has held onto hope, continued to dream, and allowed others to stand with her in her time of need.
The Back-a-Buddy campaign (https://www.backabuddy.co.za/campaign/help-thobeka-move-through-cancer-with-dignity) remains open for anyone who would still like to contribute. Donations of any size can make a meaningful difference.

Those who are unable to donate can still support her by sharing the campaign and helping her story reach more people.
