A routine snake rescue in Umzumbe took an unexpected turn when snake catcher Sarel van der Merwe and his friend, Tyran Monica Gass, responded to a call-out for two green mambas mating in a mango tree.

While Sarel dealt with the snakes, he asked Tyran to fetch bags from the vehicle so they could safely capture them.

Tyran Monica Gass was bitten badly on her legs by dogs.

On her way back, she was attacked by dogs belonging to residents in the area, suffering multiple bite wounds to her legs.

She was taken to a doctor, where she received treatment and a tetanus injection.

Most recently, Sarel responded to a call from Stephan Kippen, owner of Hayilembilas Transport, after a large snake was spotted disappearing beneath one of the company’s heavy-duty tipper trucks in Umzumbe.

Sarel located a green mamba concealed behind the front grille of the truck.

Rather than attempting to remove the snake on site, Sarel asked driver Zwelinkhosi Smith to bring the truck to Shelly Beach, where he met the vehicle in Marine Drive. After conducting a thorough search, Sarel located a green mamba concealed behind the front grille of the truck and safely removed it.
