More sardines on the way

According to the KZN Sharks Board, there should be activity around Port Edward, either by this Saturday morning or afternoon.

Local netters and anglers are bracing for the main sardine shoals to hit KZN waters by this Saturday (July 18).

The annual Sardine Run is in full swing, with shoals already netted between Port Edward and Scottburgh in June and early July.

According to Wayne Harrison, Area Operations Manager at KZN Sharks Board, another massive shoal is pushing through from Eastern Cape waters, just south of Mzamba.

“The water is absolutely black heading into the surf zone with bronze whaler sharks smashing the sardines and breaching. There should be activity around the Port Edward area, either by Saturday morning or late afternoon.”

He added that all shark safety nets have been removed from Hibberdene to Port Edward. This pre-emptive measure by the KZN Sharks Board prevents massive shoals and their accompanying predators from destroying the nets and getting trapped.

Anglers can expect excellent fishing conditions and big game to follow the silver baitfish right along the coastline heading north.
