Port Shepstone Lions Club legacy set to continue with new president
The club has done so much for the local community.
Port Shepstone Lions recently celebrated the club’s 56th annual induction dinner at the den at Port Shepstone Country Club.
Outgoing club president, Clayton Curnow paid tribute to the members for a successful year of community service and fundraising projects.
Projects included providing ongoing support to South Coast Hospice, Reinhardt’s Place, Assisi Mission Orphanage, Dumisani’s Creche, Hibiscus Food for Life, Bendigo Food Drive and Suid-Natal’s ‘Kospakke Kinders’.
The club also successfully hosted its annual Blind Bowlers weekend.
Senior citizens projects during the year included the annual Christmas luncheon held at Port Shepstone CC, monthly games afternoons and thousands of frozen meals provided on a monthly basis, thanks to the efforts of the Lion Ladies.
The club was involved with the sponsorship of 10 cataract operations for needy recipients during Sight Week in October last year.
The club donated R10 000 to the Lions Clubs International Foundation which provides support to natural disasters worldwide, and also hosted several successful events and fundraisers.
The Lion of the Year trophy was presented to Trevor Read in recognition of his superb running of the community services portfolio.
A club president’s appreciation award was presented to Past Council Chairman Denis Meyer for his ongoing and tireless commitment to administering the club.
A special award went to Lion Lady President Inika Curnow in recognition of excellent leadership.
The Stirrer of the Year Trophy was awarded to Cyril Dupouy.
Membership pins were awarded to Trevor Read (25), Gary Vogt (20) and Barry van der Veen and Alister Love, both 15.
Inika Curnow praised the ladies for their many projects in support of the needy.
Appreciation gifts were presented to secretary Bela Gallagher and treasurer Jane Massey and the Lion Lady of the Year award went to Anna Compion.
Bev Rolfe was acknowledged for ongoing dedication towards many of the club’s projects and events.
Denis Meyer formally inducted Trevor Read as president for the 2026/2027 fiscal year.
In his acceptance speech, Trevor thanked his predecessor for his leadership of the club and undertook to continue the club’s legacy of fellowship, friendship and service.
Bev Rolfe will serve as the ladies’ president.
