Umkomaas Saps bids farewell to its communications officer, Captain Ranjith Rampersad, who will be retiring at the end of July.

A university graduate, seasoned police officer, accomplished communicator and respected public servant, Captain Rampersad leaves behind a legacy of unwavering dedication, professionalism and exceptional service to both the organisation and the communities he faithfully served.

The commissioned officer has nearly four decades of loyal service to Saps. Rampersad fulfilled numerous roles within Saps, becoming one of the most recognisable and respected faces in the Umkomaas policing precinct. His contribution extended far beyond media relations. He mentored younger members, inspired professionalism, strengthened partnerships with community stakeholders and played a significant role in fostering public trust in the police.

As the long-serving communications officer and station spokesperson, he successfully bridged the gap between Saps and the public by providing timely and accurate information on crime trends, major arrests, convictions, community safety initiatives and policing operations.

Lt Colonel Mthembeni Zungu, the Visible Policing Head and Operational Commander, said Rampersad is a trail blazer and a man of valour who was at the helm of human capital, human resource development and corporate communications in Saps.

“He has scooped several prestigious awards from vision to victory. He undertook leadership responsibilities in order to exemplify what it means to be an epitome of a commissioned officer including a deed of commission issued by the State President of the Republic of South Africa with humility and pride.”

Station Commander Colonel Samkelisiwe Favourite Mncwango echoed similar sentiments and added that Rampersad leaves an everlasting imprint in policing.

“He served during trying times of Covid-19, the flash floods, 2021 unrest, the 2010 FIFA World Cup, the burning of 17 school children during an accident, the infamous sugar cane serial murders, and the first March to March to name but a few,” she said.

“This seasoned communicator has contributed to the winner of the Best Station Award in South Africa. He is recognised for his innovation, leadership, media relations and commitment which has definitely made a significant impact on policing.”

Major General Makhosazana Victoria Kheswa thanks Rampersad for his commitment to justice, exemplary leadership, professionalism and dedication to the people of South Africa.

“Your passion for policing has demonstrated that not all heroes wear capes – many proudly wear the distinguished blue uniform of the South African Police Service.”

Captain Rampersad’s legacy will be celebrated at a retirement function today (July 31).
