Dezzi Drags pulls in fans
A traffic jam of racers lined up to test their mean machines against the best in the province.
Dezzi Raceway near Port Shepstone roared to life recently as petrolheads from around KZN descended on the South Coast.
Local drivers were well-represented with locals from Margate, Port Shepstone and Umtentweni among those taking to the start line.

Terry Yannikakis of Umtentweni came out on top. His Team Rotary Sync twin rotor F1000 Mazda bakkie secured the fastest quarter mile of the day, scorching down the track in 9.04 seconds, with a top speed of 250km/h.
Yannikakis was thrilled: “We managed the fastest time and speed on the day, making us the fastest rear wheel drive car in KZN.”
Also from Tweni is George van Niekerk. He was making his first ever run in a Capella Rotary called Trixi. His best time was a modest 14.9 second run and a top speed of 170km/h.
“We’re testing, and I’m still learning how to handle the car and the turbo kick-in, but next time I feel like we can take the next step – this is a potential ten second car,” said van Niekerk.
Neeran Govender of Marburg competed in his modified Audi Quattro S3. He secured a best time of 10.8 seconds and a top speed of 208km/h over the quarter mile. Govender was satisfied with his performance and loves Dezzi Raceway. “It went great and the best thing is it’s right in our backyard! The venue, the people and the atmosphere were very welcoming,” he added.
Divesh Ramsunder from Port Shepstone took part in his fully modified Audi S1. While he insisted the vehicle is still a development in progress, he was satisfied with his 11.3 second run and 207km/h top speed.
Mohammed Toufiq from Margate took part in his 2 litre 8V VW Golf 1 called the Grim Reaper. His best time for the quarter mile was 11.3 seconds with a top speed of 195km/h.
“We had minor technical issues, but the car did well. It’s capable of going faster so we’ll be back at the next event to claim a 10-second finish,” promised Toufiq.
Dane Gounden from Sea Park also took part in his modified Opel Corsa Ute with a stock motor. He covered the distance in 12.765 seconds with a top speed of174km/h. “It was excellent,” said Gounden. “We were aiming for 13 seconds so we actually did better than we hoped, and I again beat my personal best,” he added.
