Ugu District Municipality’s Disaster Management and Fire Services teams responded swiftly to a devastating structural fire in Mkholombe informal settlement on July 28.
Within minutes of receiving the emergency call, teams were on the ground, working alongside response partners to contain the fire, coordinate relief efforts and ensure the safety of affected residents.

Spokesperson for the municipality Zimbini Mpurwana said the blaze destroyed 19 households.
“Ugu Disaster Management immediately activated its emergency response plan, providing essential relief assistance, including mattresses and blankets donated by the South African Red Cross Society to support displaced families. Further strengthening the relief effort, support from local businesses, which have committed to providing food parcels to affected households was coordinated.”
Ugu Disaster Management volunteers have also been mobilised to assist with ongoing relief operations and community support.
