Juvenile python found hiding in Munster chicken coop

A juvenile Southern African python was safely removed from a chicken coop on a farm in Munster earlier this week.
Snake catcher Sarel van der Merwe was called out on September 22 after the young python was discovered high up under the roof of the coop.
The Southern African python is a protected species and is listed as Vulnerable in the latest South African Red Data Book. The snakes may not be captured or killed.
According to Sarel, the Southern African python is unique to South Africa and is a large, bulky snake that is unlikely to be confused with other species.
Despite its size, the species can be difficult to spot. Its diet consists mainly of warm-blooded prey, including small antelope, monkeys, game birds and dassies. It may also prey on leguaans and even crocodiles.
The Munster area has recorded several recent python sightings, including a small hatchling found on the beach last week.
Residents who encounter a python are urged not to attempt to catch or kill it, but to contact a qualified snake catcher for assistance.
