Muslim trust does it again – this time for Thanda Community Centre in Mtwalume
Since its launch in 2015, Thanda’s FSED initiative has generated more than R43m in food value.
A refurbished teacher resource centre and a new 4×4 vehicle, together valued at about R880 000, are strengthening a local non-profit’s ability to support children, educators, farmers and families across rural communities in Mtwalume.
This is all thanks to the generosity of the South African Muslim Charitable Trust (SAMCT).
The infrastructure upgrade has transformed Thanda Community Centre’s previously overcrowded and poorly ventilated resource centre into a brighter and more adaptable space.
It now serves as a hub for facilitator training, youth activities, literacy support and guardian workshops, benefiting more than 1900 community members each week.
The new 4×4 vehicle is equally critical, enabling Thanda’s team to reach remote programme sites, transport agricultural supplies and produce, and respond more efficiently to the needs of the 1180 small-scale farmers, currently supported through its Food Security & Economic Development (FSED) initiative.

In a region facing unemployment, poverty and childhood malnutrition, the initiative is helping strengthen household food security and create more sustainable livelihoods, while its ECD centres provide access to early education for more than 300 pre-schoolers.
