Cornerstone’s principal qualifies as Makaton tutor

Makaton gives verbally challenged children a means of communication, which contributes greatly towards them leading a happy and fulfilled life.

Cornerstone Learning Centre couldn’t be prouder! Principal, Tammy Smulders has completed her Makaton Tutor’s Course and is set to become a Makaton trainer.

It was an honour for Tammy to have been selected to do the training as there are strict criteria which the candidates have to fulfil. The training was recently held in Cape Town at the well-known Vera School for Autistic Learners. The course was overseen by top tutors from The Makaton Charity which is based in the UK.

Tammy will be the first qualified Makaton Tutor in KwaZulu-Natal. This will make training courses more accessible in KZN to special needs teachers, therapists, and parents, and has the potential to make a difference in so many lives.

Cornerstone is grateful to the Rotary Club of Hibiscus Coast and the UK based Hope for South Africa’s Children Foundation for their generous donations which enabled Tammy to attend the training course. We know she will make excellent use of her increased professional skills and knowledge of Makaton.

Thanks to the Vera School for their role over many years of hosting Makaton and other training courses for teachers, therapists, and parents of autistic children.

Thanks to Makaton South Africa for initiating this tutor’s course. It was something our beloved mentor and role model, the late Maggi Golding, had long worked towards. Finally, her incredible dream has been realised. We will keep her legacy alive, continuing to love, teach and support children with autism to the very best of our ability.
