Promoting active learning through experiments

Grade 3 teachers Joshua Rungasamy and Eden Pillay employed innovative strategies to make science learning interactive and practical.

Umdoni Christian Academy in Park Rynie endeavours to transform classrooms into dynamic learning environments where learners actively engage to experience the thrill of discovery.

Grade 3 teachers Joshua Rungasamy and Eden Pillay employed innovative strategies to make science learning interactive and practical. By using instructional texts with sequence words and commands, Rungasamy guided students through a hands-on experiment: separating colourful sugar from sweets.

This activity not only brought scientific concepts to life but also nurtured valuable skills such as following instructions, understanding sequences, collaboration and problem-solving.

Moreover, the activity extended beyond the science lab, integrating English language arts into the learning experience. Students analysed the instructional texts used in the experiment, enhancing their comprehension and critical thinking skills. They then followed a recipe and embarked on a collaborative baking project, applying their newfound knowledge and teamwork skills.

Mthwazi Sithole enjoys getting practical in the classroom.
