Leader in education bows out

Gounden called on teachers to pursue excellence in teaching.

The principal of Marburg Primary, Dr Balenthran Gounden, recently retired after more than three decades in education.

At a function at St Michaels Hotel, Gounden expressed appreciation for the staff, SGB, parents, learners and unions of Marburg Primary, where he served as principal for the past 20 years.

“The messages of well wishes from many of my colleagues have touched my mum, my family and I so deeply,” he said.

Reflecting on a pivotal moment in 2005, he recalled receiving two principalship appointment letters – one for Orient Heights Primary in Pietermaritzburg and the other for Marburg Primary. Choosing the latter, he noted that he believed it was divine alignment that brought him here.

“In life, you will face tough moments, but never give up. If God is for us, who can be against us? Through God, all things are possible,” he said.

His role at Marburg Primary, he emphasised, was one of service.

“I tried not only to lead but to be a shepherd to this school community, a father figure, guided by the teachings of my spiritual parents, Pastor Reggie John and Sandy, and supported by Nelson Thomas and Loranda.”

His message to the school management team: “You are also the backbone of this school. Lead with empathy and discipline, and treat everyone with love.”

Gounden called on teachers to pursue excellence in teaching.

“Our words must breathe life into our learners. True success lies not in titles, trophies, or accolades, but in the lives we shape while building a successful community.”
