Banning decision should be lauded

DEAR Editor,-

The letter in last week’s Herald regarding the fireworks ban in Umtentweni refers.

I feel obliged to respond to ‘Tweni Resident’ and, as a fellow Hindu myself, I totally disagree with the views he/she expressed.

I am sure the decision taken by the Umtentweni Ratepayers’ Forum to ban fireworks in their suburb was not based on religious grounds but, rather for the welfare of people, pets and wildlife.

That decision must be lauded.

One of the basic tenets of Hinduism is the expression of love and respect for all things on this planet. The blasting of canon sounding fireworks, which terrifies man and animal alike, cannot be condoned by Hinduism.

Whether there were or were not fireworks present during the arrival of Rama and Sita, does not make it right or religious.

Come on ‘Tweni Resident,’ have a heart. Let us not be selfish on these wonderful religious days, so that peace and harmony prevails.

The decision to ban fireworks should hold true for any occasions or excuses which man uses to celebrate.
