Christmas ruined with no water

Having no water or electricity is becoming a way of life.

DEAR Editor,-

What a Christmas it turned out to be! I had six guests arriving for lunch that day – it had been planned for months. On December 24, the water went off for several hours, only coming on late in the afternoon. I thought, well that’s it – had my usual one day with no water and one day with no electricity for the week – like every other week.

On the 25th, no water all day, and on the 26th – still no water till late afternoon. Not only did I have to warn my upcountry guests to drive up our road with extreme caution from the main road due to the 30 potholes and ‘craters’, I now had to be the gracious hostess, after trying to cook with no water, hiding all my pots and pans outside, so we could bluff that all was tidy in our open-plan dining area.

Since I have no swimming pool to take buckets of water out of, I had fortunately been conditioned to placing 5 litre bottles of water in all my bathrooms. On the 29th, we were once again without water. It is really reaching a stage that we have this happen so often, no electricity, no water, no safe roads due to badly maintained surfaces, that it has become a way of life. Thank you Ugu and Eskom.
